In the Spotlight: Social Networking Sites
A Caution for Your Business

By David A. Linsky - CEO, SSC, Inc.

BeBo, Facebook and MySpace are but a few of the many social networking sites that have recently soared in popularity and been featured in the national news. Most concerns with these sites center on teenagers and their potential exploitation by predators. But another danger with broad implications for business is the amount of information that is leaving corporations and institutions as internet usage grows.

Exposure
Large numbers of social networking sites’ profile pages contain users' current employment details.
Vulnerability
Many corporations believe these sites are a sink for productivity and offer “a way in” for cybercriminals gain important proprietary information.
Opportunity
These sites are expected to insidiously encourage more hackers to insert malicious code into dynamically generated Web pages.

Studies are being conducted across the Internet to quantify and characterize the risk to business from these social networking sites. Close to 50 percent of surveyed corporations are now blocking usage of these websites and allowing only those with a specific business requirement access to them. Increasingly, companies are looking to secure and control their employees’ web activity because of the impact it can have on the company in terms of productivity, bandwidth and security.

Here are some additional recommendations:

Protection
In situations where employees have access to these sites, then it’s imperative that they are taught best practices to ensure they’re not putting personal and corporate data at risk.
Beneficial Programs & Policies
The best way a company can remedy the risk from social networking sites is to have strong usage policies and employee education programs.
